When your teacher gives you an assignment of composing an essay, he or she normally tells you what type of essay it should be, because the teachers normally expect you to demonstrate particular skills while writing a particular essay. However, there are cases, when the teacher does not tell you what type of essay you have to prepare. At the best case, you will get a topic of the essay. Sometimes you can be even given a task of composing an essay on a free topic. This means that your task is not only to compos an essay, but also to decide on the essay type which will be applied to your essay.
This task is much more difficult, since you do not get any exact directions. You have to create everything on your own. How can a poor student choose an essay type without the teacher’s direction?
It is not very complicated, indeed. And we are going to teach you how to choose an essay type without the teacher’s help and advice.
The first thing that you should do is to decide on the future topic of your essay. If the topic is absolutely free, you had better write about something which awakens your interest, and which is well studied by you. Depending on the essay topic, you will determine the essay type. For example, if your essay topic is controversial, you essay will be argumentative. If you just describe something, your essay will be either informative or descriptive. If you present some category within your essay, it will be classification. And so on, you will choose an essay type which corresponds to your essay topic. By the way, you cannot determine the type of your essay if your teacher does not require it.

When I was a student, my tutor used to tell me, “If you do not know the essay types, you are not a student at all”. In fact, every average student should know the main essay types and their features for everyone who wants to become an expert in writing. Now let us present the most common essay types:
- Persuasive/ argumentative essay. Present the general statistics or the experts’ opinions on a certain problem. You may agree or disagree with them and give reasonable examples to support your opinion.
- Comparison essay. Presents the differences and similarities between 2 topics.
- Descriptive essay. Usually answers to “why, what, when”-questions. For example, if the descriptive essay is about an air bed, you should explain what it is made of, what it serves for, etc.
- Evaluation essay. Explains the importance, value or relevance of the vent or thing under consideration.
- Narrative essay. Provides a story in a sequence of events. If you want to write a good narrative essay, you should give a lesson or idea to your reader. This way your essay will turn meaningful.
The tips presented below will help you find out what is preferable and what should be avoided while your essay writing:
- Try to avoid modals. It is more preferable to use strong verbs instead;
- Try not to apologize about what you are saying, as you are just expressing your point of view;
- Try not to go too deep into details. Your reader may be bored too rapidly by the odd information.
