When I was a student, my tutor used to tell me, “If you do not know the essay types, you are not a student at all”. In fact, every average student should know the main essay types and their features for everyone who wants to become an expert in writing. Now let us present the most common essay types:
- Persuasive/ argumentative essay. Present the general statistics or the experts’ opinions on a certain problem. You may agree or disagree with them and give reasonable examples to support your opinion.
- Comparison essay. Presents the differences and similarities between 2 topics.
- Descriptive essay. Usually answers to “why, what, when”-questions. For example, if the descriptive essay is about an air bed, you should explain what it is made of, what it serves for, etc.
- Evaluation essay. Explains the importance, value or relevance of the vent or thing under consideration.
- Narrative essay. Provides a story in a sequence of events. If you want to write a good narrative essay, you should give a lesson or idea to your reader. This way your essay will turn meaningful.
The tips presented below will help you find out what is preferable and what should be avoided while your essay writing:
- Try to avoid modals. It is more preferable to use strong verbs instead;
- Try not to apologize about what you are saying, as you are just expressing your point of view;
- Try not to go too deep into details. Your reader may be bored too rapidly by the odd information.
