How to choose an Appropriate Essay Type

When your teacher gives you an assignment of composing an essay, he or she normally tells you what type of essay it should be, because the teachers normally expect you to demonstrate particular skills while writing a particular essay. However, there are cases, when the teacher does not tell you what type of essay you have to prepare. At the best case, you will get a topic of the essay. Sometimes you can be even given a task of composing an essay on a free topic. This means that your task is not only to compos an essay, but also to decide on the essay type which will be applied to your essay.

This task is much more difficult, since you do not get any exact directions. You have to create everything on your own. How can a poor student choose an essay type without the teacher’s direction?

It is not very complicated, indeed. And we are going to teach you how to choose an essay type without the teacher’s help and advice.

The first thing that you should do is to decide on the future topic of your essay. If the topic is absolutely free, you had better write about something which awakens your interest, and which is well studied by you. Depending on the essay topic, you will determine the essay type. For example, if your essay topic is controversial, you essay will be argumentative. If you just describe something, your essay will be either informative or descriptive. If you present some category within your essay, it will be classification. And so on, you will choose an essay type which corresponds to your essay topic. By the way, you cannot determine the type of your essay if your teacher does not require it.
