Before writing any essay, you should have clear understanding of what types of an essay exist and what are the main essay types’ distinctions?

In this connection, we are going to speak about the main essay types and their distinctions.

Descriptive essay. In the descriptive essay you are supposed to give a clear description of a thing, object, event, feeling, emotion, etc. which a writer wants to present to a reader. A writer should express his or her thoughts in such a way, so that the reader will imagine the described object in minor details.

Argumentative essay. In the argumentative essay you should, first of all, choose the argument, which will be possible to discuss. Your duty as a writer is to provide all the opinions, which exist as for this problem, but you are not allowed to express your own. A general objective tone is characteristic of an argumentative essay.

Persuasive essay. In contrast to argumentative essays, in persuasive essays you should express your own opinion. More than that your duty is to convince the reader of your own point of view as for the discussed problem.

Compare and contrast essay. In this type of an essay you are supposed to choose two or more objects, so that you will be able to draw the similarity and the difference between them, which is the main purpose of your compare and contrast essay.

Of course, these essay types are not the least, but they are the most widespread among the academic assigned one. So, now I hope, you will not confuse any of the essay types and, thereby, will be a success.

Descriptive Essay:

You should also pay your attention to the effects, which take place after the above mentioned causes. You should present the topic, give the causes and concentrate on the effect.

Parameters to divide essays into types

Essays are not all the same. There are discursive essays and descriptive essays, argumentative essays and illustration essay, informative essays and reflective essays, and a lot of other essay types. Essay types presuppose some differences between the papers of unlike type. And every time when you work on your essay, you are required to fix the laws o writing the essay of the particular essay type.

How the essays are subdivided into types? There must be some parameters according to which you can attribute one essay to one essay type, while another essay will be attributed to another essay type. And we want to tell you what are these parameters for you to understand the procedure of essay types division better.

Essays are divided into different types according to the following parameters:

  • The academic subject on which the essay is written may influence a lot its attribution to one essay type or another.
  • The topic of your essay also plays quite an important role in attributing the essay to some essay type. However, we can notice that more often essay type influences the essay topic.
  • The essay structure also depends on essay type. However, we can attribute it to the essay type parameters, as well.
  • Essay writing manner must be the most important essay type attribute. This is what shows the difference between the essays best of all.

According to these parameters, you can attribute your writing to one essay type or another. However, you have to discover which parameters correspond to which essay type. Otherwise, you will not manage to fix an appropriate essay type.

Let us forget for a while about the common meaning of the essay types. Forget about all those argumentative, compare/contrast and persuasive essay types. They seem so dull and routine and you may think “What else can I find out about the essay types?”

That is why we are not going to talk about the essay types that you know everything about. Let us imagine that one day at the colleges /universities there will be a rule of choosing a type of an essay according to your mood.

It means you will have to write an essay but according to completely different requirements. So, let us discuss your different types of mood and a kind of essay that you will have to write.

You are in love and totally happy

If you are in such a mood, it is your duty to write an amazing and cheerful essay. If your writing is dreary and monotonous, you will definitely get a bad mark. Besides the content, there are some other requirements for the appearance of your work. You should supply it with little hearts or make it in pinkish colors. Choose an unusual type of print and use whatever margins and spaces.

You have some problems and your mood is awful

Well, this type of an essay presupposes you to be gloomy and dismal. Supply your work with some ghastly stories or choose a horror-stricken topic. Use skeletons and scary faces within your work or make it in the murky colors.

Everything is fine with you and your mood is just peaceful

It is not hard to guess that your work should also be peaceful and calm. Do not use some strong words and expressions. Do not be too emotional or anxious. Disclose your topic in a quiet, unruffled manner. To make your work more attractive, use light-blue, greenish or yellow colors. You can insert the pictures of the clouds, sun or flowers in your essay.

How to distinguish between essay types

Students often are at a loss for distinguishing between different essay types, especially between the essay types which are very alike, such as argumentative and discursive essay type, and the like. How to solve this problem if you do not feel like reading long articles about every essay type each time when your teacher gives you a task to compose an essay?

I can give you a tip, which is certain to help you a lot. To learn to distinguish between essay types, and to get rid of necessity to repeat reading the same guides several times, you should compose a table for yourself. The table has to be divided into three columns:

1. In the first column you will point the names of the essay types.

2. In the second column you will write special features of the type. We recommend you to underline the characteristics which are the most distinguished for each essay type.

3. In the last column you will write comments for yourself which will help you to understand what is the essay type. I mean, you may write phrases which will help you to indicate an essay types, and not to mix it with some other essay type.

Such a table will come in very handy, you will see it. You will spend a lot of time on composing it once, but on the other hand, you will save a lot of time in future. Do not you think that it is better to work hard only once, than to do it regularly?
